The Big Bang Theory & Oudenaarde (Belgium)

@Corneel hooked me up with the most hilarious show in years: "The Big Bang Theory". It's not on any Belgian (or European) channels but you can for sure find it online.

Recently I noted a picture on the wall in appartment (the kitchen more precisely) that is a vintage poster for a local beer in my hometown (Oudenaarde) in Belgium. Where the hell did they get the idea of putting up a poster for "Petre Devos", a beer that no longer exists. It's even got the ancient way of writing the name "Audenaarde" at the top. Nothing geeky about that. It really beats me.

Anybody got an idea where this comes from?

I am so very glad you posted this!

I've noticed that poster in the show a number of times, but couldn't ever get a good enough look to tell what it says. You've solved the mystery for me!

Hi! Thank you very much for posting this! I have been trying to figure it out for quite some time. I have a penchant for obscure signs/posters, especially ones in TV shows I am fond of. I have been trying to figure out what this was for months now. The most recent episode (Nov 17th) offered us the best look we've had at it yet. I was convinced it said Peure (or Plure) Devos. Again, thank you for solving this mystery. Now perhaps I will be albe to find this somewhere and add it to my collection. My next aquisition will be the Batman cookie jar! =)

Many thanks to you!

I'm a friend of prfkttear's.

That's a somewhat famous poster, at least to typographers, because it is the source of the font based upon it, known as "Petre Devos." The Flemish brewery in the 1930s used that style of artistic lettering on quite a few signs and commercial art, so it became widely recognizable. Nick Curtis, a typographer who has created many fonts in the Art Deco model, used that poster and the signs as inspiration.

The appearance of the poster in a television show might be regarded as something of an in-joke.

Thanks Mike, the mystery seems solved, great.

PrfktTear, if you want I can have a look around for an original panel like that. My brother-in-law has a huge collection of similar beer-advertisement so he should be able to give some clues ... interrested?

Very useful files search engine. megaupload-download.com is a search engine designed to search files in various file sharing and uploading sites.

Hi Guys! You can find out where to buy "The Big Bang Theory" poster, "Petre Devos" at www.ChasingProps.com. You can find out where to buy it, which costs from $249-$498 depending on size, or sign a petition to get it mass produced for a cheaper price, probably something like $30.

Have Fun!

The reason nerds love this poster is because the Petre Devos font was named for this poster which was originally drawn in the 1930s, long before the 60s era of psychedelic fonts, and long before computers... Now I'm rambling. You get it.
